Equine Assisted Parenting

Equine Assisted Parenting: An interactive program for parents of children with ADHD

In this experiential parent education program, you’ll learn strategies for developing a healthier relationship with your child by building a connection with a horse.

Horses have a lot in common with kids with ADHD. They can't seem to focus on what you want them to do, but can focus for hours on things that interest them (e.g. eating grass). They can be unpredictable. They need immediate gratification, immediate rewards, and immediate consequences. Although they may appear not to care, they’re actually extremely sensitive.

A good relationship with a horse involves earning his trust and respect. You won’t do that by yelling at him or losing your $%!#. Long-term rewards don’t work. Time outs don’t work either. What does work? Being clear and calm inside and out. Giving choices. Responding with just the right amount of pressure. Being assertive, not aggressive or passive. Consistency. The same is true with people.

This program is based on the Natural Lifemanship model of equine-assisted practices.  Natural Lifemanship uses science-based principles to build connected, cooperative relationships with horses. The skills you’ll learn here are immediately transferable to the humans in your life, including young ones with ADHD. Parents of children without ADHD are sure to benefit as well.

The program runs for four weeks. It will be held outdoors in Dover, Pennsylvania. No horse experience is required - all work is done on the ground, not in the saddle.
